I got this game in the mail today. Had to order it because none of the stores carried it. it was a hit, and they made limited copies. Amazon zipped it here.
I am finding it a tough lil game to get used to. The story line is that this guy has no memories, and when taken into a small town, this young girl named Mist befriends him. Gives him new memories, and they are the best of friends. One day she leaves without warning, and doesnt come back. Worried, he goes in search of her. Finds her living in a new village, and conviently the farm next to hers is vacant, and she begs him to stay. Work the farm, get to know and love the new town.
The controls were awkward to get used to. It took me forever to figure out how to equip something or hold something. now that I have, its easier, but I wish for a short cut rather than the long process of having to scroll through to equip and unequip. Most games have a short cut to allow that. anyway. I need tools to work this messed up farm land. Mist gave me a watering can with a leak, and a chipped up hoe. The church lady gave me an old wore out axe, and I got a sickle from the garden kid. No idea on where to get a hammer from or what these floating things are that surround me. some emo kid gave me a monster glove, and I grew a bean stalk near the church. I climbed it to "whale island in the sky"
I guess I am kinda lost. Most games have a logic to them, or start the story line slow and let it unfold. This has alot of weird unanswered questions. What are these floating things, and why do I need monster food? I had a barn built, but dont know what to do with it.
I think I need to head to gamefaqs or something. I love harvest moon, and I love RPGs and this is supposed to combine those two. I am just extra lost.
any help?

Rune Factory is much more slower paced than your normal RPG. Think it more of a Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing take on an RPG game. Basically, like in Harvest Moon (or maybe more like Crossing), you can focus in on whatever you want to do.
A few tips:
1) The + and - buttons on the Wii-mote are handy. One of them brings up the quick equip menu and one of them brings up the regular menu. I forget which is which. Too late at night. lol. Also, you can equip items (potions, etc) to your other quick menu and use left, right, up, or down on the control pad to use them.
2) The Monster Glove is for turning monsters into pets. Basically, when you in the Whale island place or in other dungeons, you have the Glove equipped and go up to the monsters and pet them with it. It'll take a little bit, but you will convince the animal to your side. Once convinced, you name the animal and then the animal goes to your barn.
The monster food is only needed if you decide to have monsters in your barn. You don't have to do the whole monster thing if you don't want to.
Monsters can be useful though. Some of them can help collect stuff, like rocks & wood, and also you can take one of the monsters to a dungeon with you and they'll help out.
It can be a pain to keep up with the monster food if you have more than one monster, but then again, the monsters seem to last a long time without food...lol.
3) It does take a long time to get really good equipment in Rune Factory. Basically, you'll have to get yourself a good forge later on and even then, well, you have to wait till you have enough money for the really good books on farming equipment/etc. Lots of patience is needed with this part.
My best advice about the farm land is to clear whatever you can and farm whenever you can. I'm on my Second Year in Rune Factory and most of my field still has rocks and stumps, but I've found some land to farm on. Just farm where you can and grow some crops.
Crops cannot be grown in the winter though. Expect in dungeons.
4) I don't know if you've found it yet, but there is a dungeon outside of Mists house. In the over grown field in front of Mist's house, there is a dungeon hidden. One day, Mist will ask you to clear the field with your sickle. Just cut the grass and you'll find the dungeon.
5) The Floating things are called Runeys. They will come into play later on. Don't worry about them right now. You'll end getting a device that'll be able to collect them later on and put them to good use.
6) There is a storyline to the game, but like I said, it unfolds rather slowly. Its more of an Rpg for the Animal Crossing mind-set. Just take your time: grow some crops, explore Whale and the other dungeons. Talk to the villiagers. There are some cool holidays in Rune Factory too.
7) Unlike Crossing, you don't have to worry about real time. Its got the whole Harvest Moon time-thing. Unlike Moon though, as far as I can tell, you don't have to have the storyline done by a certain time. You can take your time.
8) If you want you can look at Gamefaqs. There is some help there.
If you need to know anything else though, feel to ask. I've been playing the game for awhile now.
It is a really addictive game once you start growing crops, raising monsters, talking to villiagers, take part in holidays, and visit some of the different dungeons. There are some very unique villiagers too.
But anyway, the game is very non-linear. I think it reminds me more of Crossing than it does Harvest Moon. Well, you know, expect for no animals and there's dungeon crawling & farming. lol. I don't know, maybe not Crossing too much. I guess it just seems a bit more relaxed than Harvest Moon even.

Thank you! knowing I dont have to be in a hurry is a huge help. I have been harrassing all the villagers trying to get them to either cough up equipment, or move the story along. Its nice to know that I can putter, and not find myself cornered or overwhelmed when a sudden monster attacks the village, and I find myself unprepared.
I am going to putter, and try to figure out more about the game. I guess I am spoiled, as I normally buy the guide that goes with games, but no guide exists for this one.
Maybe I will play ACCF and go visit you today.

Thank you! knowing I dont have to be in a hurry is a huge help. I have been harrassing all the villagers trying to get them to either cough up equipment, or move the story along. Its nice to know that I can putter, and not find myself cornered or overwhelmed when a sudden monster attacks the village, and I find myself unprepared. Ya, Rune Factory is very slow-paced. Much more so than a regular rpg in fact. Has that whole Harvest Moon/Crossing feel. As for equipment, ya, the villagers only give you your first few farm equipment (expect you will get something from a villiager to collect Runeys later). Your best equipment will start coming when you get a forge and purchase some books to learn new 'recipes'. Oh and don't worry: no villiage monster attacks that I can see. All of the monster fighting happens in dungeons and you can actually, if you want, avoid the dungeons for as long as you want. The game doesn't rush you into fighting monsters or raising monsters. To progress the story, you will have to go into dungeons and defear the dungeon bosses, but if you are not too concerned about the story you can just farm, talk to the towns people, etc. Lots to do in this game. Thats too bad about the guide. I think a guide for this game would have been cool. Oh well. Its kind of fun exploring this world too. That would be great. We'll be online this afternoon for sure. We would like to talk to you again. We play on weekends and on week days, mostly in the afternoons (some at night too). Come by and visit us, eh? We can throw some downloadable content your way and show you are our houses! DF2506

im feeling better about the game. I have several tools now.
I have the Fishing rod Water can Axe Hoe Harvester sword FIre Pole Hammer Monster glove to pet
I found some iron in the cave, and used it to forge a better hammer. I want to upgrade the hammer to open the paths blocked by rocks everywhere.
I have found my way to the island in the sky, and rescued the Melody girl who opened a spa in town. Rosetta opened a grocery store, and has a better selection. The Blacksmith gave me a basic blacksmith book. Cinnamon gave me a cheap fish rod. Tons of girls in this town.
I upgraded my house to add a kitchen, lab, forge, a fry pan, and pot for the kitchen. I finally figured out where to find Ms. Candy so she could teach me about Runes, and turning them into things.
I have a pet monster who hunts for veggies, and roots all day, or follows me and fights with me in the dungeons. I dont have any food to feed him, so I dont know how he stays so happy and chipper. He is always in a good mood. I am on Spring 20 of my first year, and have harvested several crops of turnips, and strawberries.
I asked for a rainy week so I can go dungeon exploring without spending 3 hours watering crops. I have been having fun exploring. I am happy I got the game.
